I’m pretty proud of this piece. It’s a book cover for a client of mine. The author and I discussed doing a noir-style cover, sort of roughly painted, showing a dangerous woman looking into a mirror, with various mementoes of her life scattered on the dresser. This actually started out as a 3D render via DAZ Studio, and then went through a great deal of work in Photoshop to get the painted effect. Here’s the 3D render if you want to see the difference between the two.
One of these days, I’m going to learn how to straight up paint a cover like this. I did paint a few details in, here and there, and I collaged in a few pieces onto the dresser.
So, what do you think? Thumbs up? Thumbs down? Let me know!
i like it! The eyes seem a bit light/undefined to me – i would try a little dark edge around the irises, and maybe a darker shade to the irises at the top, and tone down the one bright spot on the white of the eye in the mirror. Close up looks better than the small thumbnail version, and i’m not sure how well the minor tweaks would translate, but that’s all i’d change. And hey it might just be personal style preference 😉
Nora,
Thanks! It’s a new technique for me, but one that seemed to work out quite well. I’ll give the suggestions you made as a try and see how they work out. Making the eyes stand out a bit more certainly wouldn’t hurt! I’m thinking I ought to do more images in this style, and see what sorts of trashy fun stuff I can come up with. I spent a good portion of yesterday evening looking at pulp fiction book covers, and there were some wonderful images on the net!
