It’s absolutely hysterical for me to read this particular comic and compare it to my life today. Most days I’m up around 5AM. My wardrobe consists of what I call my Mama Geek uniform – funky t-shirts and recycled jeans skirts. As for the hair? I dyed part of it blue. You see, you can dress strange and still be responsible!
I wish I knew what pen I had used to draw this cartoon. The cartoons from this period have stood up very well to the test of time. The ink has not faded nor turned blue. The lines still look very crisp. Honestly, this is some of the neatest drawing I did on “Rats!” Over the four-year period that I drew this comic, I frequently changed pens and drawing pads, which led to some inconsistent results. I chalk it up to being a poor college student who could never find the same art supplies twice at Mish Mish.
By the way, does Mish Mish still exist in Blacksburg? I’d be curious to know.

It’s good to know some things haven’t changed. Sadly, the apartment building I used to visit for several parties was demolished last year, but if Mish Mish is still there, it’s still Blacksburg to me. Is Gilley’s still around? I’d really like to know!

Now you’ve made me nostalgic for my old college stomping grounds. I spent more than a few hours browsing the shelves of Mish Mish! I miss having an actual art supply story around.
Gilley’s is still around and in the same spot. However Mish Mish will not be in the same spot that you would have remembered it. It is now on main street and the place it used to be located is a restaurant…or bar. It has been about 4 or 5 different places since Mish Mish left.
I am glad I ran across these cartoons. They really are great to read.

Well, if I ever get back to Blacksburg, I’ll have fun hunting for Mish Mish then! I spent a lot of hours in there. Wish we had an art supply store like it here where I’m at now.
