ACW Episode 101 – My Husband, the Rocket Scientist

This never fails to happen. I will be flat out exhausted, brain totally fried, and the Hubster, who has not one but TWO degrees in aerospace engineering, will come along to discuss the latest fascinating scientific theory he’s read about or project he’s working on. And he must talk to me about it in great length.

He did this to me last week, and I couldn’t help but slowly try to edge my way out of the room. I love the man and I’m glad he’s so smart, but I have been so swamped with work these past two months and it’s only getting worse. Friday evening was not the time to explain to me how space can be “quantized” into eleven dimensions. Or something like that.

Anyway, I’m busting ass these days, trying to stay ahead of the rising tide of work. I’m hoping to keep on schedule with the cartoons and blog posts, but if I don’t, you know what happened.

My brain ran away. And I ran away with it!

ACW Episode 100 – Snow Balls!

Oh good god. Have I actually drawn 100 strips? I can’t quite believe it. And yet here we are, at the 100th episode of “The Adventures of Cynical Woman.”

So now what do I do?

Keep drawing, obviously. I’m still having fun with this. If nothing else, it’s a fun way to document what goes on in my family. Perhaps years from now when I am old and grey and in the nursing home, my children will pull out these cartoons and show them to their children, who will then nod sagely and say, “Yeah, that explains a lot about this family.”

In any event, we had snow the day after Christmas, a good 12 inches of it. It was a bit of a surprise to me, and I wish I had cleared more work stuff off my plate so I could spend more time outside with the kids playing in the freezing white stuff. I did get out a couple times, but usually by the time I did, the girls were already done and wanted to come back in for hot chocolate. Still, we did have a snowball fight or two. But the Hubster was really eager to get out there. He build our cock-eyed snow man all by himself even…

From left to right, that’s Pixie, Princess, the cock-eyed snow man, the Hubster, my sister and me. I still don’t know what the snow man was looking at, and now he’s all melted, so he’ll never tell.

In addition to building a snow man, the Hubster also built Snowhenge in the big lot behind our house. Will have to see if I can find that picture. And he had snowball fights with the girls. I was on my way out to join then when Pixie came in snuffling and fussing about how Daddy hit her with a snow ball. Poor baby! But all he did was drop it on her and she asked him to do it, so…

Any way, one of my New Year’s Resolutions this year is to take a whole day off next time it snows. I want to bake, read, draw, and play outside. Screw working while there’s snow on the ground. I got better things to do on a cold winter day!

ACW Episode 99 – COOKIES!

Seriously, this was a mistake. I had no idea how much work would be involved with the job of “Cookie Coordinator” for Princess’ Brownie troop. Nor did I suspect how tempted I would be by all those delicious cookies…

Of course, the cookies aren’t even here yet, but as the “Cookie Mom” for her troop, I was give a free sample box to take home. I haven’t eaten the entire thing. Yet. But I want to. Oh, do I want to.

We’re having a new tile floor installed in the front half of our downstairs this week, so my online presence will be spotty at best. Hopefully, I get all my blog posts done before the workmen show up. Otherwise, if the blog looks sparse this week, you know why!

PS – if anybody wants to buy Girl Scout cookies, you know where to find me 😉 And yes, Princess’ Brownie troop is doing “Gifts of Caring.” If you’d like to support the Girl Scouts but don’t want to eat the cookies yourself, you can buy boxes to be donated to a worthy cause. Princess’ troop is donating their “Gifts of Caring” boxes to the USO. I’ll let you all know how to place orders later on, if you’re interested.

ACW Episode 98 – New Year? What New Year?!

I have been busting ass since before the holidays began and I still haven’t caught up. I don’t know why, but there was a sudden influx of work in November and December and it’s been all I can do to keep my head about water. I have a novel to finish, book covers to create, cartoons to draw, a podcast to start this week…

AAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUGH!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, calm down… breathe… just breathe… slowly… slowly…

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All right, now that that’s out of my system, where was I? Oh yeah, I’m overloaded. I’m going to have to continue to bust ass to complete everything that’s on my plate. Once the novel is finished and the podcasting is well underway, I’ll probably feel better, but I have to start podcasting this week before I’ve finished the novel. And there’s a ton of stuff going on at Princess’ school too this week. And we have to head out of town this weekend to see my in-laws–

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I better lie down now.

ACW Episo– HEY! Did I mention I got a new iPad?!!

“Bloody Mary” by Helen E. H. Madden, 28 December 2010

You guys are going to be so sick of hearing about my love affair with my new iPad. Sorry about that, but I am really, truly, honestly in LURVE!

I’ve done about a drawing a day on the iPad since I pulled it out of its box on Christmas morning. That’s a drastic increase in productivity and creativity for me, and I’m not at all unhappy about it. I’m mainly using the ArtRage app, but have been playing around in Sketchbook Pro, Brushes and Inspire Pro. ArtRage is the most complicated of these apps, but also the most flexible and it’s given me the best results so far. I’m sure, however, that I’ll get up to speed with the others before long.

I’m not using a stylus for these images, just my fingers. ArtRage lets me zoom in very close for detail, which is nice even though the zoom function is a bit of a pain to use. But it makes up for that with all the other natural art tools I can use – water colors, ink pen, chalk, crayon, etc. Layering various tools on top of each other has produced some interesting results. Again, I’m a very happy camper.

And this is far from the last you will hear about my iPad. In addition to creating artwork with it, I found a yoga app and a calorie counter/fitness tracker app. Plus I’ve downloaded plenty of ebooks. I’ve already read one book since Christmas, and plan to get through another before New Years. Yep, I’m a happy girl.

Enjoy your holidays, folks!

ACW Episode 97 – Merry ChristmaaaaaaaAAAACK!

Happy holidays, folks! I opted to go with a Christmas card rather than the usual strip, and decided to play around with ArtRage to give it all those pretty colors! Huzzah!

This is the first Christmas for our new cats, Hiccup and Toothless, and they’re quite excited by the tree. So far they’ve stuck to just knocking off lots of ornaments, but I’m pretty sure they’ll be climbing that tree any time soon. And I just know how that’s going to end. Meanwhile, we’ve failed so far to take our annual holiday picture and send it out with our cards, so if you’re on our list and you get a copy of this in the mail, you know what happened!

Anyway, Merry Christmas and all that jazz. Blog updates will be spotty at best this week, but you know I love you all anyway!

ACW Episode 96 – Reach out and…

My mother has discovered the joys of Skype, so now once a week she has a video conference with the kids. It’s very chaotic. The kids haven’t figured out yet how to sit still so they can stay in the camera frame and sometimes they like to get really, really close to my netbook and all my mom ends up seeing is tonsils and nostrils. But she loves it.

My family is visiting for a week over the holidays and I have no idea what my schedule will be like. I’m sick right now with a nasty cold, and I’ve got a lot of work to get done. So I have no idea if I’ll get a cartoon up or not next week. I’ve decided not to make any promises about deadlines over the holiday season. I may do a cartoon or just relax. Or maybe I’ll do some doodles and post those. You’ll see whatever I put up whenever I put it up.

In any event, enjoy your holidays and I’ll see you when I see you!

ACW Episode 95 – You want WHAT for lunch?

This happens ALL the time. I will be preparing lunch for myself and my darling children and of course one of them will ask for the impossible. It’s most often Pixie, asking for a grilled cheese or PBJ sandwich… sans a certain important ingredient as seen above.

Feeding young children is always challenging. When Princess was very young, I used to struggle to find things she would eat. As a toddler, she’d get a plate of sliced fruit, shredded cheese, crackers, all sorts of things I knew she liked to eat and yet she’d still turn her nose up at it. Catering to her like this meant I had to prepare two meals, one for the adults and one just for her, and that’s just exhausting of course. So one day I just snapped. I put together a plate of what we were eating, cut up into toddler-sized tidbits, put it on the highchair tray in front of her and said, “Eat or starve. I am done jumping through hoops for you, kid.”

Obviously she has not starved. But to this day we do still have our battles over food.

Princess/Pixie: “How much brocoli do I have to eat to get a treat tonight?”

Me: “All of it.”

The kids: “All of it?! But that’s a lot!”

Me: “No, it isn’t. I only gave you what I know you can eat.”

The kids: “But I can’t eat all of it. I’m not hungry anymore.”

Me: “Then I guess you’re not hungry for a treat either.”

Don’t you just love how logic works in a situation like that? Of course, they will continue to bicker and barter over the whole thing. Personally, I don’t care if they get a treat or not. They don’t need the sugar like they need the green veggies. But Hubster will sometimes relent and cut a deal, so the whining continues at every meal, the kids knowing that some days they might get what they want and some days not. It just depends on which parent is most likely to rule the table that day.

Anyway, I hope you have a lovely day. Be sure to enjoy your lunch. And if you figure out how to make a grilled cheese with salami, pickles, jam, sprinkles, syrup and no bread, let me know!

ACW Episode 94 – Why November is the WRONG month for NaNoWriMo

Let me just say, November is the wrooooooooong month for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). I thought this last year when I was working on PerNoFiMo (Personal Novel Finishing Month), which is my version of NaNoWriMo, only with the purpose of finishing a project I started but never got past the first few thousand words on.

The thing with both NaNoWriMo and PerNoFiMo is that you have to, HAVE TO, write every day, and not just a few hundred words either. The goal of NaNoWriMo is to complete a 50000 word draft of a novel in 30 days. The goal of PerNoFiMo is to come as close to finishing the first draft of that uncompleted project as I can get, and that usually means 30-40K words. That means on average 1000 words a night minimum for PerNoFiMo and 1700 words a night for NaNoWriMo. That’s a lot of words to write. And yes, they do have to be actual words! And of course, everybody is writing during the month leading up to the big holidays, and then there’s Thanksgiving when the kids are home for four days driving their hard working, frantically writing parents crazy. And then how can anyone possibly sit down to write after eating all that turkey?! Seriously, all I wanted to do after Thanksgiving dinner was curl up in a cave and hibernate for the rest of the year.

However, neither NaNoWriMo nor PerNoFiMo require that the novel being written be a perfect final draft. In fact, I think both events are ideal for banging out that very ugly first draft. You know what I’m talking about – the story so ugly only its author could love it, and even he or she might just set fire to it, it’s that bad? But that’s what first drafts are about, and you can’t get to the finished product without bringing that ugly 10 lb. baby first draft into the world.

Anyway, my sympathies and my encouragement to all you NaNoWriMo participants out there, and my congratulations to all you winners (including our dear friend Nobilis Reed!). I’ve reached a point in my PerNoFiMo project, The Little Death, where I’ve at least outlined the whole plot and I can see where I need to start doing massive rewriting. No, I didn’t really write out those final scenes. Probably about the last eighth of the book is only in very rough outline format. But it does have an ending now! Which means December is now PerNoReWriMo, or Personal Novel ReWriting Month.

And let me just say, December is a lousy month to be rewriting a novel…

ACW Episode 93 – Smells like Katy Perry

Yes, I actually said this. And just to be clear, I really like the Katy Perry album in question. I’m just annoyed I can’t play it when the kids are around, which is ALL THE DAMN TIME. And I’m also annoyed that I don’t smell like cotton candy the way she does on the CD cover art. However, me getting my butt to smell like cotton candy would probably involve doing something highly lewd and illegal at a local carnival, which would then end in my arrest. So it’s probably not worth it. But I haven’t decided for certain on that yet.

I am hard at work on “The Little Death” for PerNoFiMo (Personal Novel Finishing Month). Aaaaaaaaaand… I’ve also started a new super-secret-special project, code named VeryScary. Details on this will be forthcoming.

Have a happy Turkey Day. Rats! will go up on Thursday as usual, but I expect things will be quiet around here otherwise this week.
